Early life Wray was born in Dunn, North Carolina to Lillie M. Coats and Frederick ("Fred") Lincoln Wray.[3] It was there that Link first heard slide guitar at age eight from a traveling carnival worker, a black man named "Hambone". Link and his family later moved to Norfolk, Virginia as his father got work in the Navy shipyards. Link served a hitch in the US Army and was a Korean War Veteran. In 1956, his family later moved to Washington, DC, and from there, they moved to a farm in Accokeek, Maryland. Link relocated to Arizona with his brother Vernon in the very early 1970s, and later moved to San Francisco in the mid 1970s. Wray was a veteran of the Korean war, where he contracted tuberculosis that ultimately cost him a lung. His doctors told him that he would never sing again. So Link concentrated on his heavy guitar work. Despite this, on his rare vocal numbers he displays a strong voice and a range equivalent to Clarence "Frogman" Henry. The Trashmen's major notable hit was 1963's "Surfin' Bird", which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the later part of that year. The song was a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons, "The Bird's the Word" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow". The earliest pressings of the single credit the Trashmen as composers, but following a threat from their legal counsel The Rivingtons were subsequently credited as composers. It was later recorded by many artists, including the Ramones, The Cramps, Silverchair, Pee-Wee Herman, Equipe 84, and even the thrash metal band Sodom. It has been used in several movies and television shows (such as well-known scenes in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and John Waters' Pink Flamingos). It is featured in the soundtrack in the video game Battlefield Vietnam. Diesmal nicht wegen einer erneuten Erkrankung, sondern wegen angeblicher Probleme mit dem europäischen Organisator/Booker.

Auf Dick Dales Website liest sich das so:

“Due to unfortunate circumstances involving our European booking agency we are forced to cancel plans for the October/November Dick Dale Europe tour. This comes at an especially bad time as I am now fresh off a very successful US/Canadian tour and was very much looking forward to playing for my beloved Dick Dale family of fans in Europe for the first time since dealing with cancer. Please know that I will re-group with a new agency and be over there as soon as possible. I love you all and I thank you all so much for your prayers and positive e-mails from across Europe during my battle with cancer....”

Schade eigentlich, so langsam glaube ich nicht mehr daran, Herrn Dale nochmal in Europa live zu erleben…

Es gibt wohl noch weitere Menschen, die sich irgendwie auf die Sammlung eines einzelnen Musik-Titels konzentrieren. Bei mir ist es, wie der ein oder andere Leser weiß, ‘Misirlou’, das in der instrumental surf-Variante von Dick Dale sicher den Beginn der Surfmusik mitgeprägt und auch mit dem Film Pulp Fiction ein kurzes Revival eingeläutet hat.

Andere sammeln andere Titel und bei Youtube bin ich soeben über jemanden gestolpert, der dort seine Sammelwut auf “Ghost riders in the sky” fokussiert; darauf gestoßen bin ich überhaupt, weil ich gerade bei iTunes das neue Album “Engel oder Teufel” von Götz Alsmann erworben habe, welches eine wunderbare deutsche Version von “Ghost riders…” - “Geisterreiter” - enthält, mit Bela B. als Gast, die durchaus an die legendäre Variante von Ronny herankommt.

Noch ein Off-Topic-Hinweis: Auch eine extravagante Version von Misirlou ist auf dem genannten neuen Alsmann-Werk zu finden. Irgendwie schließt sich da ein Kreis.

Guitarist Dick Dale Brought Arabic Folk Song to Surf Music

Interessanterweise findet sich der Artikel auf den Webseiten der US-Regierung unter der Rubrik "Telling America's Story".

Sätze wie "And Dick Dale can show us that there is nothing more American than the Arabic sound of classic surf music." können auch wirklich nur auf der Tastatur eines Amerikaners entstanden sein.

Insgesamt ist der Artikel recht lesenswert, wie ich finde.

Und ein Video gibt's dann natürlich doch noch, nein, nicht Misirlou, sondern eines, was zeigt, das Dick Dale auch was anderes spielt: "House of the rising sun". Wobei das Spielen nicht so das Problem ist, aber er singt auch. Ich kommentier' das besser nicht...

Im Januar hat er allerdings die Behandlung für einen Auftritt für Fender bei der NAMM Show 2008 unterbrochen.
